Annual prize day at LCGVM on 16th April

Annual Prize Day has always been a special occasion at Lions Calcutta Greater Vidya Mandir. It is a day to appreciate & felicitate the achievements of the students who have attained excellence in the spheres of academics as well as co-curricular activities. LCGVM believes that victory belongs to the most persevering and to encourage & acknowledge the dedicated efforts of the students this day becomes a red-letter day every year.
This year, the Annual Prize Day was held on 16th April 2016 in the school’s sprawling playground, with ‘Accelerating Change’ as its theme. Dr. Pallab Das, Chairman of Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Other distinguished guests of the day were – Lion V.D. Jhunjhunwala (President, SMC), Madam Salony Priya (School Advisor & Consultant), Lion Prakash Himatsingka, Lion P.K. Jalan, Lion Ramesh Khemka, Lion Pramod Chandak, Lion Rajkumar Jain, Lion Nirmal Khaitan and Lion Bharat Bagla.

The day began with the lighting of lamp by the chief guest, Dr. Pallab Das amidst chanting of the sloka “asatoma sad gamaya”. Dr. Pallab Das, Lion V.D.Jhunjhunwala and Madam Salony Priya touched everyone’s heart with their words of wisdom & encouragement. Announcement of the opening of the Class XI and XII by the SMC President Lion V.D. Jhunjhunwala radiated energy among all the school teachers. The guests and dignitaries were honoured with traditional ‘Uttariyas’ from Bengal and beautiful mementos.

The formal part merged into the prize giving ceremony interspersed with cultural programmes. Students performed a breath taking Odissi Welcome dance getting a huge applause from the audience. The grace of the dancers took everyone by surprise. It was after this that the first set of awards – the ‘Archana Khemka award’ was presented to students by its sponsor Lion Ramesh Khemka (past President and Secretary) for topping their respective classes. Children received the awards amidst much applause. This award is a scholarship which is provided to the students.

The next programme was an astounding dance performance by the tiny tots of Kindergarden, whose synchronization with music left everyone spellbound. This was followed by recognizing students for their all-round performance, budding talent and leadership qualities. The sponser for this award is Lion S.L. Daga (Trustee and Chairman of the School Project), who instituted it in the memory of his beloved wife, Shakuntala Daga. The award was presented by Madam Salony Priya. The acclaim not only boosted the prize winners but also was an inspiration to others to compete for the coveted award in the future.

‘Que Sera Sera’ – a foot- tapping performance by the Junior school, left everyone shaking their legs and clapping their hands. The audience was then left mesmerized by the classical jugalbandi, performed by the students of the secondary section. Prizes for General Proficiency were awarded to students for securing the top three places in each section of all the classes by the esteemed School Managing Committee members and Lions Club members.

To encourage the students to be regular to school, the school awards certificates to students who brave the heat, storm, rain and cold to be present each and every day of the full academic year.

At the end of the day everyone could see the glow on the face of the prize winners and the moist eyes of the parents, who had tears of joy in their eyes because of their child’s success.
